About Discovering Delmarva

Thank you for stopping by Discovering Delmarva. This site is dedicated to helping families discover all that Delmarva has to offer. You may be wondering what is Delmarva and where is it exactly?

Delmarva is a fairly large peninsula on the East Coast of the United States. It includes all of Delaware, Maryland’s Eastern Shore and a part of Virginia’s Eastern Shore. The northern sliver of Delaware is connected by land to Pennsylvania and Maryland, but the rest is surrounded by the Chesapeake Bay, the Delaware Bay, Delaware River and the Atlantic Ocean. Most people take the Chesapeake Bay Bridge outside of Annapolis over to Delmarva, or they use the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, which connects Delmarva to Virginia Beach. People also make the trip down Route 1 or Route 13 from Northern Delaware.

Delmarva has some pretty spectacular beaches, but the peninsula is so much more than just its beaches. It is home to stunning wildlife, museums, theaters, sports, outdoor activities, a lot of history, some great shopping and some genuinely kind people.

It truly is a hidden gem hiding in plain sight.

My family and I moved to Delmarva from outside of Baltimore in 2015. For years we had been visiting Ocean City and Rehoboth Beach, but we never really got to know the area or noticed what was beyond the boardwalk until we moved here. The move was unexpected for us, but it turned out to be one of the greatest gifts we could have been given as a family. We moved during the middle of the school year and our kids were none too happy. We immediately started getting intentionally “lost” to see what we could learn about this place we now called home. At first, our kids grumbled about how much they missed our old hometown in Maryland. Eventually, though, they delighted in our journeys and what we were going to find next.

What we found was blue heron, dolphins, horseshoe crabs, donuts, slushies,  a zombie apocalypse, NASA, bridges, beer, fishing, an awesome zoo and corn hole. Along the way, we have met interesting characters, too. We also got to go for a ride in a fire truck around Milton. Yup. The volunteer fire company gives kids rides around town in their fire truck. How cool is that?

We are not done discovering everything the peninsula has to offer. Thank you for coming on this journey with us. We hope to offer families useful tips and ideas to help them explore Delmarva on their own and create lasting memories.
